Once upon a time, in a small village nestled between mountains and rivers, there lived an old wise man named Ashar. The villagers often sought his advice on matters of life, love, and happiness, for Ashar had an uncanny ability to simplify life’s deepest mysteries.
One day, a young man named Omar, who had fallen into despair, came to Ashar. His face was etched with sadness, and his voice was heavy with frustration.
“Wise Ashar,” he began, “I work hard, I pray, but my life feels empty. Happiness eludes me, and I don’t understand why. What am I doing wrong?”
Ashar smiled kindly and gestured for Omar to sit. “Let me tell you a story,” he said.
“There was once a farmer named Idris who owned a vast orchard of fruit trees. These trees bore the sweetest fruits, providing Idris and his family with abundance year after year. But Idris grew careless. He stopped tending to his trees, believing they would always bear fruit without effort. Soon, the orchard grew wild, and the fruits became scarce. Idris became angry at his misfortune and cursed his fate. Yet, he had forgotten one crucial thing: the orchard had always given him blessings in return for his care.”
Ashar paused and looked at Omar. “Do you see the lesson?”
Omar frowned, confused. “Are you saying my life is like the farmer’s orchard?”
“Exactly,” Ashar replied. “Your life, Omar, is filled with blessings—knowledge, health, opportunities, and the love of those around you. But like the orchard, these blessings require care. The care you provide is called gratitude.”
“Gratitude?” Omar echoed.
“Yes,” Ashar said, his eyes twinkling. “The Almighty, who is the source of all blessings, does not need your gratitude. He is self-sufficient, beyond all needs or wants. But your gratitude is what nurtures the blessings you already have. It is a law of the universe: gratitude brings increase.”
Omar listened intently as Ashar continued. “When you fail to recognize the blessings in your life, it is as if you are neglecting your orchard. But when you pause to say, ‘Thank you,’ even for the smallest things—a cool breeze, a kind word, or a simple meal—you water the roots of your blessings, and they grow.”
Omar sat in silence for a moment. “So, if I want happiness, I need to practice gratitude?”
“Exactly,” Ashar said. “Gratitude is not something you do once in a while. It is a lifestyle, a daily habit. The more grateful you are, the more blessings you will see—knowledge, health, happiness, wealth. But most importantly, gratitude transforms your heart, filling it with peace and contentment.”
From that day on, Omar began his mornings with a simple prayer of thanks and ended his nights by reflecting on the day’s blessings. Over time, his life began to change. His heart felt lighter, his relationships blossomed, and joy returned to his days.
And so, Omar learned that gratitude was not a gift to the Almighty but a key to unlocking the treasures of his own soul.
